LOGAN – A month in advance, Logan City officials are giving Cache County residents ample warning that the winds of charge are about to blow over their trash cans.
“Beginning Oct. 1, Logan City will only collect waste in Logan and Providence cities,” they reminded residents in a Facebook post on Aug. 25.
“All residents living outside of Logan or Providence city limits will need to contact their respective city or county offices for service-related questions and concerns after that date.”
That announcement signals the end of years of cooperation in terms of environmental services between Cache Valley’s largest governmental entities, including Logan, Cache County and other municipalities through the valley.
In most of Cache County, waste collection service by Waste Management Inc. will begin on Oct. 1.
Waste collection for the cities of Lewiston, Richmond and Smithfield will be handled under a separate contract with Econo Waste Inc.
The only temporary exception to that change will be Providence, where the city council recently voted to continue receiving service from Logan while officials acquire new garbage trucks to be operated by city employees.
The new procedures affecting most of Cache County came about thanks to a unilateral decision by Logan City officials to discontinue providing waste collection outside its city limits.
That decision was abruptly announced by Logan Mayor Holly Daines to county officials in February of 2022. At that time, Daines offered to continue countywide waste collection until December of 2023, if necessary, to ensure a smooth transition to new service providers.
Now, slightly more than month before the mutually agreed upon deadline of Oct. 1, city officials are announcing measures intended to make that service separation less painful for county residents.
All services at the Logan Environmental Center will continue to be open to county residents after Oct. 1, city officials say.
Those include the city’s transfer station, its household hazardous waste facility, its green waste facility, its construction and demolition landfill and the city’s recycling drop area.
Those services are located on the campus of the Logan Environmental Center at 153 North, 1400 West.
Logan residents will also be somewhat affected by the countywide change.
City officials say that Logan residents should look for a postcard in coming weeks to notify them of any changes in their trash collection and recycling schedules.
Information about those new schedules, effective Oct. 2, will also be posted at https://mygarbageday.loganutah.org as soon as they become available.
Logan residents with questions or concern about the upcoming waste management changes can contact the city’s customer service teams at 435-716-9755.
In their Facebook post, city officials also thanked Logan residents for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming transition period.
